This artwork is inspired by my identity. It explores the layered and sometimes conflicting feelings that come with belonging.
I feel deeply proud of who I am and where I come from. Australia is my home and a part of my identity. At the same time, there are parts of the broader culture that I don’t feel connected to at all. Things like Australian flags flying outside homes don’t represent me. They don’t reflect a country I feel proud of when they’re used to make a point that dismisses or disrespects my culture and my people. It’s just one example, but it speaks to a bigger tension I carry. I painted this piece to represent myself. It’s a piece I genuinely align with, something that feels honest and true to who I am.
